Hi ManuelFortes,

Read the books of Sigeo Shingo: Study of Toyota production system from industrial engineering view-point, and other titles from the same guy. Hard to read the translation but very useful. The basic idea of improvement is simple. Everyone want to do the work easier, faster, cheaper, better, and safer. Simplify, combine, and eliminate. I suggest to start with house-keeping is everybody's job. So, establish a strict program on: If it doesn't add value, it's waste. And work on "Waste of overproduction, waiting time, processing, transportation, motion, and from product defects". Also and before any other things, find for each process the bottle-neck. For example, making soap, the bottle-neck is at the filling line. Before and after the filling machine, everything is faster and easier to make. Your capacity of production must be established on the bottle-neck. It's critical to create of logical and easy way working production operation and maintenance program.

If you need more, let us know and we will supply, Gil.

Hi Sejatise,

I have only books because I bought them in the 80s and 90s. With Shigeo Shingo, you can profitably read:

Suzaki's: "The new manufacturing challenge", "Work-in-process management" or more.

Schonberger's: "Japanese manufacturing techniques".

Bounine and Suzaki: "Produire juste a temps" (Produce just-in-time) in French.

Never forget to start with W.E.Deming's "Out of the crisis".

I read them, applied them, and worked well but the company's owner have to agree because with egos and other influences it will fail or don't produce expected numbers.

Wish you good reading and application of their principles, Gil.

Hi dgstalcup,

It's absolutely necessary to own and start with E. Deming's "Out of Crisis".

After that, I suggest to buy or check out from a library: J.T. Black: The design of the factory with a future, ISBN 0-07-005551-3 (Hard cover) or ISBN 0-07-005550-5 (Paperback)

This book treats linked-cell manufacturing for superior quality at lowest possible cost with on-time delivery in a flexible way. The strategy in use is "integrated manufacturing production systems" or IMPS. It contains a full and needed references.

Also, I recommend an old but extremely practical Canadian book to eliminate manager's problems:

Robert H. Kent: 25 STEPS to getting performance problems off your desk... ISBN 0-396-08853-8 (Hard cover) or ISBN 0-396-08854-6 (Paperback)

After reading all those books and apply their recommendations, let me know your progress, and you could receive another titles. I wish you successful times, Gil.
