Car Door Hemming Flange Strength

12/15/2009 1:15 AM

problem:- the car door assembly is made of inner panel hemmed to the door outer panel. the hemming flange does not hold the inner panel tightly. the inner panel slides once hemmed. is there any standard for hemming pressure applied to door panels.

also is there any thumb rule for the flange sizes to be hemmed.

the arrow shows a line on door panel-which is the separation between the inner panel and outer panel.

abs,

Do you work for Tata? If so, I am an old Hemmer designer (with Volvo) with 10 years experience designing tabletop and press hemmers. I would be able to do this work on contract for you. Let me know.

Hmmmm... A long, long time ago (but in this universe) I wrote an operation and maintenance manual for a GM door hemmer machine. (Note: I did NOT design the machine) I seem to remember that after the hem operation but while still in the die, tack welds were applied through the hem to the inner panel. This would assure that the hem would not spring back and that the inner panel would not have a chance to "float".

I could be wrong. It's been a long time. I do have the book in my library at home and will have to check the list of operations when I have a chance.

I'll say put some dents along the hem to avoid sliding.

Welding and hammering on class A surfaces is not recommended.

If you want to fix it yourself, weld it with tacks every six inches and spray it with some etch primer, then paint it if you want and call it good. Just make sure to unload the door's own weight ( which will tweak it considerably ) before you work on it.

It is also necessary to use the HEMMING SEALER to avoid panel to panel movement.

There are lot of types are Hemming sealers available
