Depends on your application and what you are looking at as an individual. Solidworks is perhaps the most popular software package in the world for 3D CAD, at the present time. We converted to Solidworks about a year ago. It has been a realitively seamless transition. So in our environment it works and works well. With respect to computer requirements . . . requires a very high power computer, with specialized graphics. Not just any ole computer will work with this software. It is difficult to pull it all the requirements of the computer together and make sense out of what is out there. My personal experiences says buy MORE computer than you think you will ever need and then plan on a bunch of little nagging problems, until you get the hang of the software.
If you are planning on making a living doing 3D CAD . . . a Solidworks certified modeler will have a lot of opportunities for employment.

It really depends on what you're designing. If you're designing, say, a couple of motors, some transmissions, a gimbal or two, and a few weldments to hold it all, it's top notch. If you're designing an airplane, it's not the right package. If you go for SolidWorks, read their specs on graphics cards and go for the top end ones.
