Aluminium Coeficient of friction

Does any one know the difference in coefficient of friction between 6061 and 7075 alum.?

The question is too generic to answer completely. What condition is the aluminum? What is the surface finish? How was it produced? Are there any coatings?

the surface finish is either a ra32 or ra63. no coating. machined surface.

With all things being equal the 7075 will have about a 3% less coeficient of static friction. So if the 6061 is 1.35 the 7075 will be about 1.31

Apparently you are not willing to share your sources. The reason I asked for the source is quite obvious:

- you gave a value without indicating under which conditions the value was obtained

- even if you mention static friction then you should indicate at which pressure it was measured

- in general a friction zone considers 3 elements:

- body 1 with nature, roughness, hardness

-body 2 with same parameters

and last but MOST important whichever the sliding velocity is the in-between body 3 which is also sometimes the lubricant.

Even for only a static friction in presence of body 3 the time the bodies ware maintained in contact under a given pressure is a parameter not to disregard.

What made me curious is the values you gave >1. Most materials have in vacuum (i.e. without body 3) a coefficient around 1. I continue to ask for the source since if new data are available I shall be very interested to have them.

Is this 6061/6061, or 7075/7075, or 6061/7075, or 7075/6061? Obviously, to have friction, we need two interacting surfaces, but what are they?

Thanks for all the interest. I was trying to just determine in a very generic sense which of the two materials had a higher coefficient of friction and by about how much. The aluminum is a bottom plate that can be out of either 6061 or 7075.

we slide granulated plastic and silicone rubber across it. I was just wanting a general idea that under the same conditions, which alum material would appear slicker or stickier to the material sliding across it.

Be careful the information you got is may be not sure.

In your application the most important would be the wear resistance to the particles you let slide over the plate. from this point of view the 7XXX series has higher Re and also higher resistance to abrasion.
