About Sarah Boone

01/17/2007 9:39 AM

Was Sarah Boone an only child? How come there's only a little informaton about her if she's the first African American Woman to recieve a patent? That dosen't seem right to me if she 's the first black women to create an invention in the U.S., how come there's not more information about her?

Probably because there was little interest in African American endeavors at the time. And if she led a private life, there would not be much available after she died.

Probably because she wasn't the first African American Woman to receive a patent.

Sarah Goode is considered the first African American Woman to receive a U.S. patent. Her invention U.S. Patent 322,177, July 14, 1885.

A cabinet bed is what we call a hideaway. Some look like couches and some look like cabinets and suit offices.

Hello, Guest. I wrote the piece about Sarah Boone a while ago, but remember that the Internet contained little information about her life. These are the best links I could find.

http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blboo ne.htm
http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html
http://www.asetbooks.com/Us/Mall/Pioneers.html
http://www.ncat.edu/~childres/ironingboard.html

If you can find out more about Sarah Boone, I hope you'll share the results of your research with us. I'd be happy to amend my original story to contain whatever veriable information that you discover.

P.S. Stilljester is correct. Sarah Boone was one of the first - but not the first - African-American woman to receive a patent.

I agree. Sarah Boone's biography does need more information; however, there's very little on the Web about her. If you're writing a report for school, consider asking a librarian to help you find more information. And let us know if learn anything more!

I wonder why all the interest in Sarah Boone? It seems when it comes to history rarely do we care or record information about the person who wasn't the first to do something. What I find interesting is how little information there is on Sarah Goode. I believe many people are confusing the inventors.
