How to Pre-Wire LED Lighting

12/21/2009 1:43 PM

I have a situation where I need to pre wire about 40 individual recessed LED lights that are rated at 12V ac or dc and rather than a single large LED there is a cluster of small LED's in an MR-16 style bulb housing.

When complete there should be 3,4,or 5 different circuits that have either a few or as many as 20+ lamps on a single circuit.

Down the road a DMX or other type of lighting system will likely be used to control each light so individual home runs are the way to go.

The client already has some unused low voltage landscape cable that may work, but I'm unsure of recommendations since this is a larger than what I'm used to dealing with. It's also desirable that the circuits are dim-able, and the client states that they will work with regular dimmers.

What type of transformers, dimers, and wire SHOULD I be pre-wiring to make sure that we don't have issues. this is not supposed to be the main lighting source.

....the distance to the lights from the transformers will be from about 20'-80'

Additionally, there is an RGB ribbon lighting circuit that is to be installed and daisy chained for a total of about 80 feet of RGB cove lighting.

I am wondering what others have used for the 4 Conductor cable, as well as any other valuable hints and tips you may have?

I could wing it all and make it work.. but that's a lot to wing.. all help appreciated

What you're asking for is a lot. Even for Chicago, I think.

Wing it.

If you go to this http://www.ls-light.com/en/index.aspx site you will find power supply Units, connectors and the actual lighting fittings including RGB ribbon style LED's. We are planning to distribute this company's products soon and we are in the process of creating an easy-to-read-and-use catalogue.

If you need any help just ask.

I would check the building codes for the type of wire and installtion requirements of low voltage lighting, hate to have a building inspector come in and tag you. Could cost alot of money!

What is the amp draw of each light?
