A 12volt alternator has an output of between 13.5 and 14.8 volts ....so i'd suspect that you have purchased a 12v alternator.

By any chance did you get this 24 volt reading with the B+ wire unhooked from the alternator while you had the engine running? If so, there is a good chance that you have ruined some of the diodes in the alternator. Most alternators will charge between 13.8 volts and 14.8 depending on the battery temperature and the ambient temperature. Never unhook a battery or alternator when the engine is running. You can get some very nasty voltage spikes that will ruin all kinds of electronic devices.
