Need to get a Master's Degree

12/24/2009 7:57 AM

I have been laid off for almost a year. I have a BSEE degree and wish to change careers and become a teacher after 19 years of working in mostly maintenance management positions.

I am presently working part-time teaching for a technical college. I have applied for a full-time position, but I think they would prefer to hire someone with a Master's Degree in anything.

I don't have alot of money so I am looking for the most economical Master's Degree program I can find.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Why not ask the institution that you work for? Some, if not most schools, offer tuition reimbursement for employees taking courses at that school.

Also, the school you work for very likely has a powerful counseling department that specializes in helping people do exactly what you want. Their advice is going to be free and they have wide resources to help you find what you are looking for and help you secure funding to make it all come true. This is just a starting point.

The key is going to be persistence and casting a wide net amongst the various universities. Many, if not all, have on-line classes for advanced degree programs and they are hungry for business.

Finally, if you are willing to relocate, some cities and townships may have programs designed to help them get teachers in their area. They may be wiling to pay some or even all of your tuition if you sign an employment contract with them. I know this is a popular program for medical doctors where there are shortages.

The first question I always ask myself when I see a post such as this is:

What country or State (if USA) are you in?

Before knowing this basic information, the question is impossible to answer.

Your 19 years field experiences should be a good asset to the community colleges. We need many tradesmen in Building services. The technical college which you work should appreciate your experience and motivates you to upgrade your qualification. There must some evening time courses or part time course in around the area you are working now. Another option is to avail educational bank loan if it available in your place. I wish you al the best for your master's degree program.

hi my friend and fellow professional; i started out at Puerto Rico politechnic. They have an online course that is well below other universities as far as total cost and time needed to complete an MS. Check them out; they have campuses in Miami, Orlando and San Juan...
