Joining PVC and XLPE Cables

12/28/2009 10:54 AM

can I join cables made of PVC and XLPE ( of same cross section, say 300 mmsq Aluminum) ? Old cable is of PVC and new one is XLPE. Both cables are armoured. Service voltage is 415VAC. If service voltage is 3.3 KV any additionel precautions are required?

Thanks

Yes you can join, called splicing in the world of cables, the PVC to the XLPE cables. The PVC/XLPE are designations of the insulating jacket for the conductor. You will need the proper press to crimp the conductor sleeve and several different types of insulating tape as the weather proof, pre-formed splice covers don't seal as well on dissimiliar cables in my opinion. BTW, if both conductors aren't aluminum you'll need a conductor sleeve rated for AL-CU. My recommendation, as always when I see a question like this, is to hire somebody that knows what they are doing as you obviously don't have a clue. As luv123 stated, you are already dealing with one type of cable that is not rated for the voltage that you appear to be working with so don't try to BS your way through this and get someone hurt.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I am not planning to join LT and HT Cables. I just wanted to Know if PVC and XLPE cables of same size and rating can be joined. I understand that OD of these two types of cables is different. I would like to know if this will cause any problem during joining.
