Toyota Pickup Trucks - Not a Tacoma?

12/28/2009 8:37 PM

I bought my daughter a Toyota Pick-up truck that was a 1993 or 1994. Could it have been a different model than a Tacoma.

I'll throw caution to the winds and say that, yes, it could have been a different model!!!!

Thanks for the answer but, "could" isn't one.

How about a Toyota Hilux? Do any of the pictures under the "Thailand" heading look like your daughter's vehicle?

Thanks Moose.

With the statement I just found, I would assume that it was an SR5. However I don't want to guess. I would like someone that KNOWS, to tell me.

Compact Toyota pickups gained a restyling for 1989, with shift-on-the-fly part-time 4-wheel drive and rear antilock brakes. The new ABS system was standard on SR5 V6 models, optional on SR5 4-cylinder pickups. Standard powerplants in 1990 included both a fuel-injected and carbureted 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, plus an available 150-horsepower 3.0-liter V6. The two 4-cylinder engines provided 102 horsepower and 116 horsepower, respectively. Standard on SR5 V6 models and optional on Xtracab Deluxe pickups was the 3.0-liter V6. The carbureted engine offered a 4-speed manual gearbox, while the other two came standard with a 5-speed manual, with an available 4-speed overdrive automatic.

While not really a Toyota guy, it appears the Tacoma did not enter until 1995:

http://www.automotive.com/used-cars/11/toyota/tacoma/index.html

With this information, it appears the answer to your question "Could it have been a different model than a Tacoma." is YES.

In '93 and '94, Toyota pickups were offered in Base, DLX, and SR5.

To end speculation, use this link: http://www.decodethis.com/ It will decode the vehicle VIN, and supply that which you seek.

Older Toyota trucks didn't have an actual name. They only had one model, with a few versions. They were just called the "Toyota Truck".

Early Toyotas sold in the states were desginated "Pick-up" - at least that's how they show up at the local Autozone. O'Rielly's shows them as "Hi-lux". I can't be certain about how they were named for Canadian sales. I will tell you that my '92 2 wheel drive has 485XXX miles on it and still runs fine. Just make sure to change the oil and filters on a regular basis and she'll have a lot of trouble free miles.

Is it wider than a standard Toyota P/U, maybe it's a T100?

Also did you happen to check the title?

I had an '89 - long before "Tacoma". I think they are pretty much the same, or at least what my "Pickup" evolved into, just a new marketing thing they came up with. I seem to remember the same - Basic, Deluxe, and SR5. Hi-Lux sounds familiar as well, but then again I'm in the U.S. - I would assume that all bets are off for Canada, but I guess we all know what happens when one assumes now, don't we! I have seen other models in other countries that I often wished were available in the U.S., but it was not to be.

I owned a 1994 Toyota 8100, S/B P/U. This model was made from 1992 - 1994. In 1995, Toyota started making the Tacoma.
