Cleaning Silver Solder From Brass

01/19/2007 5:48 AM

Does anyone know the best way of cleaning some silver solder from a brass radiator top where it has spread from the filler neck, without spoiling the brass? It's on a Model T Ford rad so is very visable.

thank you,

snowy

I don't of any way to get all of it off. You can use solder wick to get the big clumps off. But, back when I was doing stained glass, there was a brush on chemical patina that would turn solder solder to a brass or bronze color. You might explore that route. I guess brass plating is another option, but probably expensive.

If you remove the silver solder by any means the area will still be visible because the platinia will be different. I believe I would have the whole thing plated with brass and let it all re-age to keep it the same color.

I have had to do this by hand before (or something similar). I very carefully filled the solder off with a smooth, flat needle file, and then polished with Brasso, still the best metal polish you can get. It's a real pain to do and takes patience, but worth it.

Or maybe a dremel tool with a low abrasion buffing head?

Sure, as long as you remember that a small slip can leave a large witness mark.

Also be forewarned that the silver solder is harder that the brass. Be like the tortise, slow and easy will get the job done.
