Brake System Proportioning Valve

12/30/2009 6:39 AM

I am still redoing the brake system on 1948 ford F1, on the rear axel there is a small brass block that the rear brake lines and the main from the master cyl. tie into, I tried to remove it to clean or replace it and found a swivel cap on top of the unit, my question is as follows; is this a balancing valve? and how do you get it off once the hose and brake lines are removed?

I know someone will say buy the manual, well not easy to come by still looking for one but ordered on line manual but hasn't arrived yet.

My totally uneducated guess is that it's just a junction block?

FSO:

The brass block you are looking at provides two functions:

  • air vent for axle housing
  • coupler for hard brake lines and flexible master line

The cap is to prohibit dust from being "breathed" into the axle housing.

Try un-threading the brass block after you have removed the lines. If memory serves, it has a nipple on the bottom to thread into the axle housing.

I have a Ford where the rear end has a brake junction like you describe and the nut that holds it to the axle tube is hollow and serves as a vent for the rear differential, maybe that is what you see?

Yep, it is only a pipe junction and the axel breather.

Proportioning valves have a knob to adjust the pressure typically between the front brakes and the rear. I retro-fitted an older PU and put disk brakes on the front and drums on the rear. I used a proportioning valve in the rear brake line to adjust how hard the rear brakes come on. I used a 2 stage master cylinder, so the front brakes and rear brakes are fed from 2 separate reservoirs. I also used a brass block like you described to make a Tee to plumb the rear brakes.
