Wiring Cummins-Onan RS12000 generator

12/31/2009 9:24 PM

Is copper #6 AWG sufficient for this generator (4 wires -- black, red, white, green)?

Thanks!

You will need to supply the current required by the load and the length of the wires before this question is even vaguely answerable.

Section 2-4 of the installation manual page 1 through 3 contains specific answers to your questions including wire size/distance

Thanks for the quick replies. Here is more context:

a) I do have the installation manual, and have noted the #8 AWG (up to 125 feet) 90⁰ C wire ... but am trying to make sure I understand the thinking behind this ...

b) The generator sits 60' from the Transfer Switch (Eaton 100 amp model); 40' is buried conduit, 20' is inside walls; with a junction box as the conduit enters the house.

c) The Transfer Switch is fed from the main panel (100 amp 240v breaker); it in turn feeds a 100 amp 240v sub-panel.

Given this ... I had anticipated that the Installation Manual would specify a wire rated at 100 amps.

As I continue to read the manual ... I sense that the generator will produce a maximum of half it's rated capacity on each 'leg' -- hence the two 50-amp circuit breakers in the genset -- so that each power wire only has to support 50 amps (and hence the #8 AWG specification).

I'm just trying to make sure I understand before I run the wires ...

Thanks for your help!
