High Temp Epoxy Resins

01/19/2007 8:31 PM

Looking for an epoxy resin to use with carbon fiber or ceramic glass fiber to build an exhaust pipe protector for motorcycle. Must be able to withstand temperatures of 450 degrees fahrenheit. Any suggestions out there Thanks

If any manufacturer knows the answer, it will be Emerson and Cuming in Massachusetts. They make a line of very highly filled epoxy products under the tradename of "Stycast". The filling material is alumina, glass microspheres, and other material to lower the thermal expansion coefficient almost but not quite to that of most metals.

Historically, Emerson & Cuming has been pretty good regarding samples, which may be all you need. Eccobond 104 has a continuous temperature rating of 382F with capability for short term exposure to 472F.

You might also want to take a look at the following links for sustained 450F operation:

Exhaust pipe protector..., why epoxy? Phenolics should be looked at.

why the need for organic? Phenolic is not inherently high temp either, much like epoxy, the advantage epoxy has is the ability to locally make it and it hardens. Phenolic does not have that ability.

No such thing as metal epoxy resin.

All you can do is add powdered metal to a high degree and add bulk thermal conductivity, which can help if hotspotting is the main problem.

Look at "COTRONICS CORP." (www.cotronics.com)

The component is "Duralco 128 450 °F Ceramic filled Epoxy"
