o-ring

Hi,

I want to design an o-ring groove. I presume if you know the o-ring cross-section dia and inner dia of o-ring you can use the AS568A series/chart and find the required dimensions? Am i right? please guide?

O-ring manufactures/distributors have groove design data on their websites I seem to recall.
Although I would always advise getting samples and trying a mockup before finalising a design.

Eriks, Parker Hannefin etc all have very good free literature available on line which will give you all the design details that you need. If in doubt get them to check your design, especially if this is a critical application.

Parker also has a free downloadable program that selects the o-ring (dia, width, and material) and gives the proper groove dimensions.

VISH4ME, what a great question

You are planning to use the Australian Standard AS5668 if you read the standard it gives you the sizes for that specific O-Ring

If you don't have a copy of the Standard you can contact us at http://www.alnoproductservices.com.au we can dig up the sizes for you.

Please Note

The Australian standards are generally used for parts machined in Australia some how parts machined in China and India some how will not fit or do not fit that is our experience.

Old rule of thumb, is 10% bigger than the width of ring, 10% larger than the ID of ring. OD of ring should be 10% more than your shaft and shaft 1-2% less than your tube ID. Flat surface to flat surface, same-same.

The two prerequisites before you design the groove are 1) determine whether the application is static or dynamic and 2) select an o-ring material that is compatible with the fluid you are attempting to seal. Those two things, plus a Parker book or design software should be all the help you need.

hi

what is the formula for calculating gland fill. I read value of gland fill should be ideally 75-80% to accomodate various expansions(thermal,etc) but in AS568A standards for a particular o-ring cross-section dia , the gland height and width is always lesser. This leads to gland fill being more than 100%
What mistake am i making. Please guide

Gland fill should be targetted at 65-85% with ideal value of 75%. never cross 90%.

This is the value at the stretched condition (the O ring gets a stretch/ compression as it sits in the groove due to the inside diameter of O ring being less than the groove (or shaft) OD.

There may be some error in your calculation/ you have not taken the stretch into account. However reduction due to stretch definitely can not bring 100% down to the acceptable value.
