What is the gear box driving? Trying to determine the environment the equipment is subjected to.

Here are some options:

Remove the shaft from the gearbox and have it repaired or copied. If it is an expensive shaft you may consider having it built up in the worn area and re-machined. Making a new shaft is likely less expensive if the shaft is not complex.

If the shaft is so large and complex that it can not easily be taken out there are companies that are able to refurbish it in place. This is costly and is only done when necessary.

A quick fix that sometimes works is get a shaft repair sleeve kit. This kit uses a press on sleeve that goes over the damaged area and a new seal that has a larger ID to compensate for the sleeve. Drive component distributors can get these for you.

How big is the shaft? The repair procedure may be to acquire a new one and replace it. Whether its worth repairing depends on size and availability of new parts. Cost of repairs to a small gear box may exceed replacement cost of a whole new gear box.

Assume since it is warn that you are using lip seals. You should consider using bearing protector type seals from a reputable maker such as Inpro or AESSEAL (there are others - usual disclaimer). They make them specifically for gearboxes.

As they usually have static O-rings on the shaft they do not damage it and you may only have to clean up the sealing area or may even be able to avoid the damaged area altogether.

If shaft strength is not an issue then hard chrome might be a cheap solution and has good resistance to fretting.

Good day

This is first time i know about this type of seals (bearing protector)

How do i check if this can work and fit into our existing gearbox? our gearbox is used in power station to drive a large fan for steam condenser.

also will i need any modification in gearbox housing?

please send me the link to the catalogue with dimensions.

Regards

Mechanical Engineer

The best way to check is to fill in a form such as this one which are available on the links already given and send them to the manufacturer. These things can be engineered to fit most applications. There are many types available, some will be better suited to your specific application than others.

However, as a general statement, if you can fit a standard lip seal, you can fit one of these without any machining.

They are quite expensive initially, but in my opinion are worthwhile in the long term, but only you can do the justification for your equipment on your site.

A properly chosen metal powder can be flame sprayed onto the worn area and then turned down. This is done to ocean-going ship prop shafts. I've seen this demonstrated by a Miller Welder representative.

SKF has a sleeve for shaft repair called Speedi Sleeve.Simply place it on shaft in worn area, and install new seal.It is available for shaft diameters up to 8 inches, and another series of their sleeve goes up to 24 inch diameter.Very quick, very simple, very effective.
