Power to compressor

01/10/2010 8:02 PM

The compressors are fed from Softstarter with backup semi conductor fuses. At times, the semiconductor fuses are blowing off. what could be the reason.

60HP, 415Volts motor, 120Amps Bussman coopper make dual element semiconductor fuses.

Perhaps the supply voltage is sagging enough when multiple loads (like other compressors) turn on at the same time causing the compressor inrush current to be much higher than expected (hence causing the fuse to operate).

Perhaps the repeated inrush current over time is degrading (or exceeding under the right circumstances) the fuse curve enough that the fuse operates.

I have seen both of these happen (especially the first). Still, more information would be helpful.

How many times does the compressor start an hour?

What is the inrush current and voltage drop?

What type of soft starter?

What is the fuse curve (are they motor-rated fuses suitable for your application and inrush current)?

What is the application and how stable and reliable is the supply voltage?
