Digital Electric Pulse Control

01/11/2010 3:24 PM

Is there a digital product out there that can be used as an external control for setting electric pulses? To be used in place of an armature for new motor design.

I am confused.

You are designing a new kind of motor that has an electronic circuit (digital) instead of an armature.

Sounds to me like an induction heater.

I must be really tired.

Yep! they're called variable pulse/(frequency) generators. Fairly common stuff. Used where the need is to controll the speed of a commutator-less motor. Current work on automotive electric propulsion conversions use them extensively. Check Google on the subject, and then go to UTube to see some in action. Cheers, Stu

Hi diode101,

Yes a new IC from AustriaMicro, type # AS5134, will create the 3 phase pulse timing to drive a PM or 3 phase AC motor. It is an inexpensive magnetic rotary encoder that will also communicate with a MPU or MCU serially. By coupling a diametrically polarized disc magnet to the motor shaft, the IC placed beneath the magnet will create the 3 ph timing to optimally drive the motor. The IC is programmable to allow for random rotational positioning of the magnet to the IC and motor shaft. Phase information for the assembly is recorded in the IC to provide correct phasing for motor commutation.

Regards,

Luther
