How does the ball mill work?

01/19/2010 1:40 AM

Ball mill is widely used in many industries. And there are many problems about ball mill working. I just wonder how the ball mill works.

Unfortunately (touchwood) it doesn't, it is one of an older generation so less breakdowns.

As on date (for last five years)- no B/D, No HD crash, Viruses protected by firewall If there are some dormant, they don't bother.

can the ball mill say this?

Some problems are not problems when we solve them and then they work better. It's a fact that ball mill is in a large demand which we can see it from the daily searches. The best way to enhance their working efficiency is to research and develop.I just said there are many problems in using ball mill which just show its degree of concern. As a matter of fact, some problems occured because of incorrect operation and bad maintenance work. If people make ball mill in a good state,the problem isn't problem any more. Here I just wonder what we should pay attention to to make the machine (in fact ,many other grinding machines) run normally.That is the customer should learn the everything about the machine instead of thinking it end after buying machine.

Also are you OP? just checked the website. The power is the power on no load (no material inside) ?

Our mills ar a bit large, but the full load power runs in to several MWs. Even if I downsacel it still 240-300W seems to be too small. It is OK for raymond or other vertical mills but definitely not the horizontal ones where the power/capacity ration is inherently low due to principle of operation itself.

Ball mill works due to the attrition, impinch and impact of the balls on the material to be crushed.When the mill rotates there is a cascading action happening and the balls which have more weight falls on the material to be crushed.

Wikipedia says"

Bench top ball mill High-energy ball milling

A ball mill, a type of grinder, is a cylindrical device used in grinding (or mixing) materials like ores, chemicals, ceramic raw materials and paints. Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium. Different materials are used as media, including ceramic balls, flint pebbles and stainless steel balls. An internal cascading effect reduces the material to a fine powder. Industrial ball mills can operate continuously, fed at one end and discharged at the other end. Large to medium-sized ball mills are mechanically rotated on their axis, but small ones normally consist of a cylindrical capped container that sits on two drive shafts (pulleys and belts are used to transmit rotary motion)."

Please refer book-

and other material handling books for details.There are some good books bt the Russian authors also for reference.

the structure of ball mill :one : cylinder: it contains the balls and steel bars whose diameter between 25mm-150mm ,and it contains the 25%-50% of the cylinder's efective volume;

two:there are two end covers on the two ends of the cylinder,contacting to the flang which is on the end of the cylinder with screw, there is a hole in the middle of the end cover ,named case empty journal;

three:bearing :the case empty journal is craning on the bearings ,so the cylinder can turn;

four:the big gear loop:fixed on the cylinder.

the principle of ball mill

the ginding work is in the cylinder of the ball mill,the balls can be brought over a height with the rotation of the cylinder,then the balls fall down because of the weight,then the ores suffer huge impact force from the balls ;on the other hand ,because of the revolution and rotation of the balls along the centre of the cylinder,with the two forces ,the ore s can be broken to pieces

When the ball mill works, motor and speed reducer transmit torque force to big and small gears of ball mill, so the barrel rotates.When the barrel rotates, Steel balls or other grinding media in the barrel are lifted to a certain height and fall down freely, so materials in the barrel are impacted. Grinding media mixing with materials impact and grind materials continuously. The grinding media and materials impact and grind each other when the ball mill rotates continuously. The final product will be discharged from outlet when it meets the request, so the grinding process is finished application range, simple structure and convenient maintenance.
