Hydrotest Requirements for Crude Oil Distillation Column

01/19/2010 11:58 PM

We have to weld piping support clips/cleats for supporting additional pipes on the shell of an existing crude oil distillation column (designed as per ASME section VIII Div. 1. Design pressure 2 kg/cm2g)

Is it necessary to hydrotest entire column after the welding ? Is there any alternative method for weld quality assurance which will eliminate hydrotest & thereby save time & resources spent on hydrotest?

First question; can your CD column carry the weight when filled with water?

Yes. Also, the foundation is adequate for in-situ hydro.

Good - so it can be done if required. I do not beleive that it would be required based on your description (as stated by sv13), but if it is required for some reason remember that this is a fit for service test and you don't need to pressurise to the original pressure test pressure.

Minor welding of cleats and pipe supports would not require you to re-hydrotest as long as you are not doing butt welding etc. Have a look in the code to find out.
