Filtration of Hydraulic System Through Portable Device

01/25/2010 1:09 AM

If a portable filtration device is designed for cleaning a particular specified line size of a hydraulic system, then can it be used for the line size smaller than specified?

Question is how much smaller? What is the type of filtering? is it a passive online filter or the filter has its own pumping unit (like a few electrostatic or kidneyloop filters have)

Unless it is drastic (and even thenunless it has its own pump, , technically yes) since filters usually will handle fluid, pressure and flow, and limits to the maximum. I don't see any problem if the fluid, pressure& temperature is same only flow is lesser.

If the pressure is higher, significantly, then of course no.

What are the line (including fluid) parameters on the designed and the proposed system?

To be more specific, I need to design a portable filtration device, specified as to clean the line size of 38mm ID. It will definitely be having its own pumping device. And also this will be used as an off-line filter and there will not be high pressure operation in the system.

Now, my question will be, can I use that same filtration device (designed for 38mm ID) for the line size smaller than 38mm ID.

As the flow rate will be decided as per 38nn ID, according to me if it is used with smaller line diameter it will only result in increase in velocity of fluid and the length of the pipe used for connection in the filtration system is not very big, that it will result in high pressure drop.

Are there any other criteria that will also have to be kept in mind?

I absolutely see no problem in it.

As I mentioned the filter assuming other things are constant, is rated on LPM capacity.

The pump/motor of your system may be a bit over overstressed, and just check up the pressure drop in the suction of the pump, so as cavitation is not initiated.

The filter will handle it, other portion , just calculate the drop in pressure corresponding to the pipe length, friction, bends etc and ensure sufficient pressure available at pump inlet.

I guess then there also shouldn't be any problem with using the same filter with line size bigger than 38mm ID. What is your opinion?

As I said, it is not the line size, it is the fluid and the quantity that normal filter sees.

As you must be aware, after the fluid crosses the inlet flange, there is a huge expansion in crossection area (filter region) which again reduces at the outlet flange.

What happens before or after is none of the concern of the filter under normal circumstances.(as far as it does not disturb the characteristics inside it)

Obviously you can not pump in 10 bar in a filter and totally open the outlet to ambient without restricting the flow- it becomes like an electric short circuit or things like that just to prove that it does not work .

IF DESIGNED CORRECTLY A PORTABLE FILTER SYSTEM CAN BE USED ON ANY SYSTEM

TO ACHIEVE THIS YOU MUST ENSURE THAT YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF THE SYSTEM AND IT IS NOT THE PUMP THAT IS IN CONTROL

TO DO THIS YOU HAVE TO HAVE A BYPASS LINE WITH CONTROL VALVE CONNECTING OUTLET OF PUMP BACK TO SUCTION SIDE OF THE PUMP FROM THE VALVE YOU CONTROL HOW MUCH FLUID GOES TO THE SYSTEM AND HOW MUCH FLUID IS RECIRCULATED THEREFORE FOR SMALLER SIZED LINES THE VALVE WOULD BE OPENED TO ALLOW MORE FLUID TO RECIRCULATE THUS LESS FLUID GOING TO BE FILTERED
