Google Tool Bar

01/26/2010 5:04 AM

My work PC has a problem, really more of an annoyance than a serious problem.

I use Internet Explorer 8 & have the Google tool bar installed. When I click in the Google search box I get the blinking cursor & start typing. At some point which can be immediate or at a later point in the typing, the text will stop appearing in the search box & start appearing in the IE8 address bar.

As I'm not a good typist I have to stare at the keyboard as I type so I don't see this until I have finished.

I use Google tool bar at home with IE8 & with Fire-fox & don't have any problem.

Anyone have any idea what is happening & how I can fix it?

If you are using a laptop as I do, is it possible that you're using a mouse without disabling your touchpad? This has caused some conflicting inputs for me in the past.

I know what you mean, I was ready to throw my laptop out of the window before I realised I was doing this but this problem is on a desktop PC.

Do you click the google search box right when you start up Internet explorer? This used to happen to me when I would click on the search bar before Internet Explorer fully loads. I had to wait until IE explorer fully loaded, then click on the search bar. Once I started doing this the problem was solved, however, you do need to wait a bit longer to search.

That's a bit hard to say, I have my home page set to Google so I think I would generally us the main search window rather than the tool bar for a 1st time search. The problem seems to happen when I am already looking at a page & use the tool bar to search for something else.

I've tried opening a new IE session & going straight into the tool bar search but, now I'm trying to force it I can't make it go wrong.

I'm sure the PC deliberately waits until I'm not looking before it goes wrong.

I have the same issue using Firefox on my desktop computer at work. Not a problem on my laptop at home. I find the "solution" is to wait until the home page loads completely. I'd love to hear a better solution, though--this is annoying!

I anticipate this and click to open a new tab before I need it, when the time comes just click to the new tab, type into the search box and no issues

This some times may happen if you start filling the tabs before the page is fully loaded!

I had this happen again today, IE was open on a CR4 thread & I'd been reading the posts so the page had been open for some minutes. I then clicked in the Google tool bar search box & started typing, the text immediately jumped to the IE address box.

I'm sure that this is not being caused by the page still loading.

Windows automatic updates this week included an update for Google tool bar. Since that installed I have not had any instances of the text jumping to the IE address so I'm hoping that this is now fixed.

My optimism was misplaced, I still have a problem.

You can try this fix...

Go to the bottom of the IE page and double-click on security settings (...or go to Tools, Internet Options, Security Tab). If "Reset all zones to default level" is grayed out, then go to the Trusted Zones tab. Click on "Enable Protected Mode." This causes the "Reset all zones to default level" button to NOT be grayed out. Very odd... shutdown IE and take a test drive...

Just checked & my 'Reset all zones' is not greyed out.

This annoying glitch happened again just a few minutes ago.

You need to restart IE for it to take effect.

Do you have caret browsing turned on?

You may run sfc /scannow

I did have that happenning but since it has quit now and I can't make it happen

I didn't have to change the 'Reset all zones' so no need to restart but it has happened in more than one IE session.

I had to look up caret browsing but I have it turned off, is that good?

sfc /scannow found no faults.

I've found that the problem won't happen if you're trying to make it, it just sneaks in when you're not looking.

Re: Google Tool Bar

I found a discussion on a Google forum which addresses this issue, it sounds like it's quite common. The solution suggested by Google is to disable the feature that shows your recent pages when a blank page is opened as follows;

"Essentially when you open a New Tab Google Toolbar tries to be nice and automatically shows your most recent windows and your history. Unfortunately this takes time to load and therefore there is the delay. I recommend that you turn of Google Toolbar New Tab by doing the following: 1. Right Click on the Google Icon on the far left of the toolbar
2. Select and Click on Google Toolbar Options
3. In the Search Tab, Under "Web-Browsing Tools" Heading disable "Enable the Google New Tab Page"
4. Click Save
5. Create a New Tab and See how the Internet Explorer 8.0 page loads quickly. you will also notice the Internet Explorer 8.0 New Tab screen which shows most of the same stuff as the Google Tab anyway."

I'll try this in the morning when I get to work & see if it helps.
