01/29/2010 4:09 AM

hi all,

i have to design packing case(which is used to seal the gas cylinder, and thus prevent leaking). for this packing case i need the basic formula for number of o ring required for particular pressure.

The number of O-rings is NOT related to the pressure!

The best is for you to look in a catalogue as the one of Parker for O-rings and LEARN what the component is how it works and what has to be respected for a succesful use of it.

Packing case and O rings ? or It is the cap?

Number of O rings=1

but properly designed with the groove and the cap OD dimensions and tolerances. I just hope that you are not experimenting with hazardous/explosive gases.

Look at internet. Parker has a standard for groove dimensioning and o-ring specification depending on static or dynamic sealing, characteristics of fluids, etc. Just choose CAREFULLY on the tables for the dimensions and tolerances and you are done. No need to invent anything.

Simple o'ring may not stand long for dry gas and high velocity of the plunger.

Probably you don't need an Oring, you need a gasket plate.

The Stillman Seal Gask-O-Seal consists of a metal or plastic retainer with grooves in one or both faces. An elastomer is molded into the groove to create the sealing element. The elastomer element may be either chemically bonded to the groove and/or mechanically locked in place by cross-holes in the retainer groove.

? Retainer eliminates seal over compression

increasing seal life

? Eliminates the need to machine costly dovetail

grooves

? Custom engineered seal design minimizes exposed

surface area to media

? Bonded seal eliminates twisting or pinching and

reduces particle generation

? One piece seal design reduces installation time/

downtime

? Bonded seal eliminates risk of improper installation

Hutchinson worldwide can help you they are expets on rubber seal.

From: Tim Hawley Master Mech.

If Parker O-Ring doesn't have a solution for your application, Contact Zatkoff

they have a quad ring sealing system that may fit your needs.
