Animal genetics question:See attachment photo

02/06/2010 6:07 PM

When an animal is born appearing as in the enclosed photo....does this appearance suggest that two different fathers were responsible for the parenting of this offspring? For some reason I am unable to figure out how to enclose the photo I wanted to include. I have no trouble on regular email addresses but this format is proving formidable. The photo that I have depicts a cats' face. The face is split like having a straight line completely halfing the face with each side of the face completely different. If you can explain to me how I might include this photo, I would be happy to oblige. I suspect that the result of two different fertilizations caused this phenomena. Am I right? Thank you, Jim

Jim,

Click "Reply to this thread". Above the text entry box you should see a toolbar. The six icon from the left in the toolbar is a camera. Click it and you'll be able to add the image. I'll add it to the original post for you.

Good day Chris, I've been trying to get an image into this box to show an end result of CR4'ers input/advice. Some site members have tried to help but to no avail. I tried the advice you just gave Jim but I don't see any toolbar. How would I set it up?

ArizonaJim,

It is impossible for the cat to have resulted from two fertilizations. If so it would be quadruploid - it would have twice the genetic material of a normal cat. This sometimes happens in the plant world and results in a viable plant - some have even founded a new species this way. It does not happen in the animal world and produce viable offspring.

As far as I know, the individual kittens in a litter generally represent discrete fertilizations rather than identical twins - you rarely see two alike - and as such it's probably not impossible for more than one tom to have fathered different kittens in the same litter.

Genetic recombination in the colouring of cats is an interesting subject, I bet. There's no end to the variety of kittens! There may be some expert out there who can explain the phenomenon that you describe. Maybe start here... good luck!
