Free - secure- remote access that works great.

02/14/2010 9:15 AM

I've been trying to help my mother in law with her PC for years and ran across something that is free and actually works. I proved it out on my sons laptop (still at home) and then my dads PC ( lives in same town) before I sent her an email with step by step screen shots so she could download it on her PC. She decided to do it without my help and hosed my authentication code by inputting a password of her own but once I got that .....I was in.... and ask her to.... "step away from the computer".

https://secure.logmein.com/US/products/free/

LogMeIn Free gives you remote control of your PC or Mac from any other computer with an Internet connection.

Simply install LogMeIn on the computer you want to access (it takes about 2 minutes), log into your account from another computer and click the computer you want to control. You'll see its desktop and be able to use all the applications on your remote computer as if you were sitting in front of it - even if you're across town, across the country, or across the world.

  • Works with Windows PCs and Mac OS X
  • Two-minute set-up
  • 100% free

If I want to access my work computer from home, do I need to install this at work? Then does it "go both ways"? In other words, can I access home from work, as well as work from home? I'm going to install this today. Thanks.

No, just go online anywhere and log in user name, password and authentication code assuming your computer is running at the time. It only has to be on the PC that will be remotely controlled. It will even let you do a restart and log back in, I even switched users from the family account to my administrator account while away from home.

I deleted 949.1 MB of cookies and temporary crap on my in laws PC (they live 5 hours away) using CCleaner.

Lynn the way it works is it uses your primary PC/Laptop whatever address you prefer as an access point. Yes they give you the option of both ways. Normally for two computers they don't charge extra but more, they do. It works pretty good for me the only thing is the computer that you pick is the boss in terms of hard drive settings, i.e. mouse movements. Theres another one called mypc.com that is also good but a little more expensive. But overall logmein.com works fine (unless of course your remote computer is turned off because of an electrical hiccup then you have to have someone turn your computer back on.

You've mentioned twice1 that this costs you - but the site linked to states that the free version is "free". Got any amplification on that please? Are you reviewing the same product?

1 2nd reference said mypc.com offering was "a little more expensive" - implying that the original proposal was not free.

Most everything offered on the internet if "free" trial. But if you know a secret, go for it!

I use it, it works quite well but it does cost me about $60/year.

I use other software that does precisely this and is absolutely free.

www.teamviewer.com

It needs to be installed at both ends, and the person at the end to be remote-controlled has to give you his account code and his passcode. You enter these, and you then have his screen open up in a new window on your computer. You have control of his mouse and keyboard, and he's able to use his mouse and keyboard too.

I've fixed my Mom's computer with this a couple of times already, and it works like a charm. Both computers slow down some, but not by too much.

Cheers! DZ

I use teamviewer, too. I've used this on my laptop sitting in Dubai and working on my daughter's PC in the Philippines. after being given the code and password, you own the remote PC. you just have to remind the other user to not try using the keyboard or mouse while you're working, or the window you're working in loses focus.

there may be instances when it is better if the remote user types an entry himself instead of you, to facilitate the process, such as when typing commands in the DOS mode.

Teamviewer also has a chatbox, just to make sure the remote user understands what you want to do or are doing. remote access is on a per session basis. this means that after you close the session, access and control is over. you'll notice a bit of a lag, but that's understandable.

the best part of it is it's FREE! the app is made by HP.
