Piezo Electric Tile / Flooring

02/16/2010 11:26 AM

we are designing a piezo electric tile of one sqaure feet dimensions , what we intend to achieve is that it should bear our own weight and also able to generate efficient power.

i have tried to surf about all the available piezoelectric materials but i still dont know which is the most efficient one . can anyone tell me as to how to go about the process as from the past one year no one has guided me.also please let me know what are the necessary requirements for starting the project.

There are many articles and other resources on the web concerning piezoelectric power harvesting.

The biggest issue is that the realistic power level being returned will never offset the manufacturing and installation cost of the system. It would take a mall sized floor system all day to charge sevaral cell phones. Human foot traffic has very little energy in it while complex floor based electronics that can stand up to decades of use and abuse from cleaning and wear and tear will be very expensive.

To me having a million dollar floor just to make several tens of watts of usable power every day doesn't workout as being practical or realistically cost effective.

True, and worth a GA.

If it's a student exercise it's worth doing, but if it's a commercial project then the real purpose of the design may be to get government (or similar) funding or as a "green-wash" component.

Look at how many multistory buildings now have a cute little wind turbine stuck on so they appear green. The press release usually gushes about how the new "UrbanGreen" (tm) building uses the awesome power of nature to generate over 2000kWh of energy every year (really?, don't use it all at once).

thank you very much for your reply. well it is definitely a student exercise and a part of my mini project. well i need your help because i am just making a prototype 1 sq feet of piezo electric power generator, just for model exhibition . all that could suffice is a satisfactory amount of power generated when we stand upon it.

Putting these tiles in the parking garage so cars run over them makes more sense. Putting them in a roadway so many cars run over them may be a workable idea.
