Maybe this will help:

An algorithm to find a pair of sums from a list of numbers?

The rolling sphere method is simple, provided you know everything there is to know about the lightning stroke before it hits. Imagine a large beach ball of radius R rolling around over top of everything in your installation that is grounded. Anything below the outside of that beach ball is protected. All you have to know in order to calculate R is the actual stroke current and the actual stroke/surge impedances.

Pardon my impertinence, but should you be designing lightning protection if you don't know this?

I have developed an EXCEL-based calculator that contains all of the mathematics and algorithms to solve the 3-dimensional geometry problem that is the Rolling Sphere Method. I presented the calculator and technical paper at the Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board Seminar in July 2010, in Portland, Oregon, USA. I developed the calculator because my job includes reviewing a lightning protection system's air termination system to ensure that everything that should be within it's zone-of-protection is in fact within that zone. The only other method that I know of that permits such a quantitative review is 3-D CADD, which was a non-starter for me. The calculator also checks that the required sideflash distance to masts and to catenaries is met. The single equation privided in NFPA 780 only works against a single mast, which is not often the case. I may be contacted at ncamerino@hotmail.com if this is the type of help that you are seeking.

Yes, but e-mail me and I'll attach the calculator with instructions in my reply. What is DSPL?
