MMA and TIG Welder

02/26/2010 1:07 AM

Dear All,

My understanding on power source of MMA and DC o/p TIG is constant current power source. I feel curious whether every MMA machine can do TIG (scratch type) by only changing torch and output polarity. Kindly share the knowledge pls.

Tks and Rgds,

. It is my weakness. I supposed that MMA welder is enough.

MMA is meant for Manual Metal Arc Welder and TIG for Tungsten Inert Gas Welding.

Would like to express my apology for making you confuse.

No apologies necessary.

Someone more well versed in the welding arts than I would have probably known what you meant.

Back on the farm, we referred to MMA welders as "stick" welders.

I am a casual welder and will not try to give you advice.

Cheers.

Most of them can, but it is important to use ones with a strike voltage of 60 to 75 volts. Some cheaper low output welders low output voltage, but if you are using a MMA machine with AC/DC volts option it will be more than likely a good quality machine.

Dear Garth,

Thanks for your info. Could I take note that strike voltage can be equivalent to open circuit voltage?

Tks and Rgds,

Dear Garth,

Thanks again for your explanation.

By the way, is there any way to reduce power consumption in normal MMA welder?

I am thinking if a machine can be automatically idle after rest for 15mins during operation and will automatically switch on again after striking frist arc. Is it possible? Pls advice me on this matter.

Thanks,

Kotuu2.

In a standard transformer MMA welder the only losses are the magnetising current and heat losses which are not great compared to when you are welding. Apart from fitting capacitors to improve the power factor which will reduce power loss in the lines but would not reduce true power when in use.

You cannot strike an arc if the welder is off, so you would need an auxiliary detection circuit to switch the welder in when trying to start an arc, this could be accomplished with a switch on the welding torch or an electrical detection circuit when the electrode touches the workpiece. But really the complexity would not be justified unless there is a compelling reason.
