API 5L Specification PSL 1 and PSL 2

03/02/2010 3:57 AM

Dear all,

In purchasing a pipe API 5L, is it mandatory to stated either the pipe is PSL 1 or PSL 2? For PSL 2, is it mandatory to stated the delivery condition for the pipe which are either it is R (as-rolled), N(normalizing forming) or Q(quenching & tempered)? Really appreciate if somebody can tell me the differences between all delivery condition mentioned & how to decide which one to select.

thank you very much..!

PSL defined as Product Specification Level in API 5L , yes it is mandatory to stencil on pipe surface in addition with below for both case PSL1 & PSL2

1) Manufacturer Name - AB CO

2) Pipe Specification - API 5L

3) Specified Dimension (outside x sp. wall thickness) - 14" x 0.375"

4) Grade and class - Gr A

5) Product Specification Level - PSL1 or PSL2

6) Process of Manufacture - seamless (S),welded(W)

7) Heat treatment - Normalized and tempered (NH)

8) Test Pressure - 1500 PSI

example - ABCO API 5L 14" x 0.375 B PSL2 S NH 1500PSI

PSL 2 is more stringent requirement as compare to PSL1 , in PSL2 charpy test is mandatory, tensile strenth and chemical composition is more as compare to PSL1

with Regards

While ordering a pipe following informations should be metioned as a Minimum

1. Pipe Size in ND

2, Pipe Material with Grade or Tensile Strength

3. Thickness or Schedule

4. End Connection BE or PE

5 LENGTH : 6 ( SRL ) OR 12 ( DRL)

6 Applicable API STD if Line Pipe

7 PSL 1 or PSL 2

These informations should be treated as enough
