Computer Problems

03/02/2010 9:25 AM

Greetings All. When I power up my HP desktop, I hear the audiable beep, but when it is doing a memory check, it shows the 512 memory then freezes. 4 or 5 hours later it clears and the operating system-XP loads( but runs very slowly). Is this a motherboard problem or a hard drive problem? I have an identical parts machine. What would you advise? Thankyou for your input.

Have you tried skipping the memory test and see if the same problem occurs? 512 for XP seems to be on the edge of minimum requirements. You may not have enough for all your programs to load.

The audible beep may be a coded trouble warning from the system bios. Identify what bios system your computer uses. What bios system your computer uses does come up on the DOS start up screen briefly. You can then look up what the coded beeps mean.

What you describe though sound like bad memory chip.

Bad sector in the hard disk can result to the problem highlighted.

Bad RAM Module can cause it also.

But, I will suggest you try system restore by choosing an earlier date of one week before the highlighted problem emanated. This might correct it.

How many memory modules your computer has?

Your computer has a memory module damaged. Get new one and this will solve your problem. Your memory modules must have the same speed.

To help your computer run quickly Boot with a XP CD and select the repair option, later run these commands:

CHKDSK /P /R This will take a while, later run

FIXBOOT command and respond yes, this will fix your boot sector. later type exit and restart your computer.

Other things you can do is to delete all temporal files and turn off no needed services.

Free up as much memory as possible...you may have a problem with operating memory. I'm not a computer expert, but it worked for me.

Can you tell us more about your machine? Specifically, approximately how old it is, model #, XP service pack #, hard drive type and capacity, and motherboard brand and model?

What prompts these questions is that I ran across an HP desktop media center system that developed a won't-boot problem. The only way to get it to boot up was to pull the CMOS battery, switch the motherboard jumper to reset the BIOS, then replace the battery and put the jumper back to it's normal position. After that, it would boot up OK. The motherboard turned out to be a proprietary one made for HP and the only solution was to replace the board.

Without knowing more about your system, it's kind of hard to tell what's wrong or give any suggestions. Let us know, please.

Thanks!

Logan

If you're going to switch the jumper you needn't pull the battery; it's an either or scenario...
