Portable Generator

03/04/2010 2:56 PM

I am installing a temporary portable generator and I was told that article 702.6 in the NEC says the the transfer equipment shall be suitable for its intended use and design and he said no ATS can not be used with a portable generator. That only has to do with parallel operation correct? I am not using these in parallel therefore I can install a portable gen to a transfer switch.

Thoughts...

Hi thanksinadvance,

Transfer switch (manual or auto) is required so you can transfer your power source from normal power to emergency power or other way around. not just for parallel operation as you mentioned. however if you are referring on portable generator that your load will only plug in directly to the unit without enter connecting with the existing building wiring system, then transfer switch is not really required. because you will just plug in your equipment directly to the portable generator.

On the other hand if you are using that portable generator to power up the whole building structure with the existing wiring system connected with local power or other power than your portable generator then you MUST have to fit transfer switch (manual or auto).

On your post you did not mentioned exactly what is the application so I anticipate as mentioned above.

kind regards

Roman
