Swages vs. Reducers

No, a swage is formed. Swaging is normally the method of choice for precious metals since there is no loss of material in the process. Sort of like a flare tool on copper tubing.

It would have been better if you had titled your post: "In Piping Fittings, What is the difference between a Swage and a Reducer?" As far as I know (piping) is the only place that both of these items exist.

The difference:

- A Swage is normally fabricated to be used to make pipe line size changes for/between pipe sizes 2" and smaller. However Swages are made with the large end 4" and smaller sizes. Swages are normally joined to other pipe fittings of flanges by "Socket Welding" or "Threaded" connections. There are rare some exceptions to this.

- A Reducer in normally fabricated to be used to make pipe line size changes for/between pipe sizes 3" and larger. Reducers are normally joined to pipe, flanges or other pipe fittings by "Butt Welding"

- Swages and Reducers are both made in Concentric and Eccentric styles

Swag is a carpet and when the reducer applies it'self that's usually where you end up. HA HA?

A swage is sometimes used on refrigeration tubing to reduce losses.A swage tool expands the tubing inside diameter to equal the outside diameter of the entering (identical sized) tube.This saves cost of fittings (couplings) and reduces line losses.Plus, you only have one solder joint instead of two.

Difference is swages have at least one end socket welding or thd. but reducers have both ends butt welding.
