Split Rivet Fasteners for Joining Wood to Metal

03/12/2010 1:52 PM

I'm looking for a fastener that I believe is a sort of split rivet used to join plywood to metal. They are used in the construction of luggage (like trunks), and packing cases for musical instruments, scientific, and other sensitive equipment.

Upon examination of a trunk made by Seward Manufacturing out of Virginia, the fasteners used appear to be a pop rivet that is deformed on the back side as there is no hole in the cap like a blind rivet. I can see a round indentation in the wood that looks like a tool mark, and metal that has been spread apart like a split rivet. My best guess is that it is a combination split/pop rivet with the mandrel on the back side that pulls the tool head against the split shank causing it to bite in to the wood.

I have been looking for these for some time and cannot find what I need on the Internet. Perhaps it is because I don't know the proper terminology. Anybody know of such a thing?

I don't remember the name, but they are used extensively in the production of "roadie" cases. One such brand is Anvil Case. Google them. They have a parts site, I think.

They are driven in from the front and expand along the split. They require a large specialized sort of arbor press for proper installation. You could use a hammer and a backing plate of steel.

I know this isn't much, but I burnt those brain cells out long ago.

Good luck.

Thanx

The type of fastener Anvil Case uses is exactly what I'm looking to find. They sell hardware but not the rivets. I still would like to know how they're installed.

There are presses specifically designed for installation. The manual machines have a handle which drives the fastener. It does look like a complicated arbor press. There is a hopper which holds the rivets and with each handle stroke a new rivet is fed in to the drive anvil. Length of the rivet is such that it protrudes about 3/16 through the two pieces being joined and the backing plate swages the rivet to prevent it from pulling out. There are also automated presses.

I was serious about the hammer. We used to use hammers in areas where we couldn't use the machine. Small cases are a pain.

As as consultant, I ran a company that competed with Anvil for three months years ago while the owner recovered from a heart attack. You'd think I could remember more details, but...........................

What did the backup plate look like? Was it flat, or was it shaped in some way to redirect the prongs back into the wood? Do you remember the supplier's name.

Does jay cee sales ring a bell? So far they seem to have what you're talking about. I'm waiting for a reply from them.

Sorry; I seem so needy, but I feel close to figuring something out that I've been working on for 30 years (on & off). I don't expect to compete with Anvil Case; I looking for a retirement sideline

The backup plate was just a round, flat steel disk about an inch in diameter. As the prongs penetrated the wood, they spread apart on their own and were just flattened to each side by the plate, which left them flush with the inside surface.

Jay cee sales does ring a bell.

I gotta give a GA for that. It's the best info I've come up with in 30 yrs., and from someone who was in the biz (sorta).

Thanx again

Just brain storming a little...I think I can fab up something using a pneumatic palm nailer that would give unlimited clearance. No auto feed, but rivets could be placed by hand and batch riveted.

Thanks!

Google ATA cases. Some of these (pro) cases are certified by the Air Transport Association after testing to determine that baggage handlers can't destroy them.

That looks right, but is there a tool for installation or do they just split when hammered in? I'll check with that link Monday, as well as Google with that nomenclature. Trunk nails never occurred to me!

Thanx

Check these. they are expensive. You might look for a used manual machine on line.

Since you are in the US., try Tandy Leather, there are supply stores all over. The one here in Spokane is called the leather factory. Those types of fasteners and related eyelets are used for saddle making. They also sell the setting tools that form and split the back when you press or hammer them. Try www.tandyleatherfactory.com for local locations. They have a free printed catalog that's quite usefull.
