Will Pigging Break the Lining?

03/15/2010 11:25 AM

I want to ask about the possibility of making pigging for water steel pipeline of 28" but the problem is that the line has an internal lining, the contractor saying that the lining will be broken by the pigging, is it true pr not.

Would depend on the type of lining and the type of pig used. A Squeegee pig should be fine. A squeegee pig is a rubberized coated foam plug that conforms to the inner surface of the pipe. It would wipe the sides of the pipe and push any contaminates in front of it. Problems could arise if there is sand or small rocks in the pipe, the squeegee pig might scrape those against the sides and bottom thus damaging the lining.

You could consult with your contractor and ask if this type of pig would be better than not pigging at all. Also consider if your need to pig is worth risking damage to your lining and / or loosing any repair contract with your contractor.

A gel pig would also pick up the debris on a pipeline. At a recent meeting I commented that nobody found problems of damage when pigging a lined pipe. The three groups were the pigging contactors, the lined pipe supplier, and the third group is anybody who has ever tried it!

The first question I would ask is...who sold you on a lined pipe you cant clean. It sounds like the contractor is not getting paid enough for the risk. How can the contractor be assured that there isn't any existing damage before he starts to "PIG"?
