Underground Cable Sizes

03/15/2010 11:32 PM

I am looking for cable sizing calculation and name of vendor for under ground cable which can serve in area having condition as:

1. Voltage grade: 10 kV

2. Ambient temp: (-) 28 deg C to +46 deg C

3. Frosting/Icing during winter: up to 500 mm below grade.

4. Length of cable: up to 4 km or long.

5. Cable size: up to 70 mm2, 3C.

Any web link for sample calculation (cable sizing) will be very helpful.

Hi shock007, I dont know about the vendores, but here are some hints on how to calculate the sizes.
1. Get the length of supply, maximum allowable drop and current/power demand figures.
2. From the cable vendor's datasheet calculate voltage drop of cable as per the cable length and current you are drawing from that cable. Start with the lowest size satisfying the the current/power demands (to minimize cost). The first one that satisfies is your answer!
3. Increase number of runs (resulting in the reduced capacity of power needed per cable run) if the size goes out of your limits.
And do take care for the derating factor and power factors in your calculation. Also consider the reduction in current carrying capacity with ageing..
Hope it helps

Most cable manufacturers that sell MV or HV energy, utility, transmission (etc) cables will have something suitable in their product range.

Also try Generalcable (New Zealand), Olex, Amercable (USA), Gaoncable (Korea), etc (you do not say which country you are in but most have branches around the world).
