PLF Determination for Power Plant

Many a time , I came across the PLF(plant Load Factor). Could you please help me, in getting understanding what is PLF and how it is determine for a specific plant. Also, when determining the gross generation of a power plant we multiply the rated capacity of the plant with Operating hours and PLF, could you please clarify how this approach is estimated.

A plant load factor is a measure of average capacity utilization. If the PLF is affected by non-availability of fuel, maintenance shut-down, unplanned break down and no offtake (as consumption pattern fluctuates lower in nights), the generation has to be adjusted. A power (electricity) storage is not feasible. A generation of power is controlled to match the offtake. For any duration, a power plant generates below its full capacity. To that extent it is a capacity loss.

Plant Load factor = Actual Energy (Electrical) Out put for a period / What It could have produced in the period (ie rated capacity output)

= Actual Output in time period T / (Rated capacity x T)

So

Actual Output = Rated capacity x T x PLF

Simple?

In fact it is otherway round , PLF is calculated based on the above (eg annual PLF, Monthly PLF etc)

Of course along with this you have availibility factors etc few others.

Another way to look at PLF is to determine HOW MUCH remaining capacity is available to see if you will need more generation capacity any time soon. For this level of study, you need to look at another relationship- PEAK power produced (kVA) used vs. potential power production (kVA).

Each calculation tells you something important about your system.

If you see a relatively high "second" calculation and relatively low "first" calculation, then you need to see what can be done to shift some loads to "off-peak" hours to keep the generator more evenly loaded and to increase the back-up capacity.

If both numbers are relatively close numerically, then you look at the second one (and the likelihood of any major power consumption growth) to determine how soon you will need to buy more capacity, and to project the likely amount of capacity that will be required.

For annual PLF the planned annual shut down duration is also included by some by some the duration is excluded for the annaul PLF calculation.

All that has been stated so far looks to me more like CAPACITY FACTOR (PCF) i.e the energy produced / rated energy output in reported time.

PLF is more to do with how much the plant is loaded during the OPERATING period.

Example: 100 MW rated plant is required to run only for 8 hrs/day and generates 700 MWh/day. However, it is shutdown for 20 days in a year for planned maintenance, then for a non-leap year:

PLF = 700*365 / 100*8*365 = 87.5%

PCF = 700*(365-20) / 100*365*24 = 27.6%

The only issue with the "CF" calculation is that it tells you how well your investment is being utilized, not whether the investment needs to be expanded or whether the utilization needs to be modified to enhance performance or control costs.

PLF is the abbreviation of plant load factor.

Average PLF varies with the installed capacity and generation of the power plant.
