OD to Thread check

03/31/2010 3:43 PM

What equipment/method will check the Threads to another outer diameter on the same part?

Maybe an optical comparator.

But I don't understand the question.

Print call out is 'runout .0015 from the pitch of a thread to an OD' on the same part

So, this implies that the two features are on the same centerline.

Put in lathe, true up, rotate and measure runout with a dial indicator.

Or #1.

Or?

How would that work - only would be checking the OD of the thread to the other OD on the same part.

Never mind. You don't understand runout. It can be done statically and dynamically.

Actually I don't think you understand. It is the crown of the pitch diameter not the OD or ID that the callout is refering too. In otherwords, checking the pitch diameter of the thread to another OD or ID. It in no way is the same, even though it might be turned at the same time. FYI - QA usually does not usually have a lathe to check part(s) with.

You will need a thread gage made for this. the gage will screw onto the part and then tram (measure) the o.d. (outside diameter) of the gage while having the part sitting in a vee block on the datum diameter.

the gage needs to be made where the pitch diameter of the id threads are less than .00015" runout with the O.D.

Questions?
