Which Tool to Tighten CV Joint Boot Bands?

04/01/2010 4:49 PM

Which tool is used to tighten CV boot band such as those used on EMPI or GKN boots? These bands have a rectangular hump on the back close to its end and are held in position by a lip of metal on the inside of the band close to the end of the that slips into one of multiple rectangular holes that have been stamped into the band. Confusingly, the EMPI catalog refers to these as 7mm wide "ear" bands.

I assumed that http://www.amazon.com/Empi-W0133-1643984-EMP-EMPI-Boot-Clamp/dp/B001HLXFHG was an "ear" band.

Which tool do I use to tighten the clamp with the hump and the rectangular holes?

A) Lisle 30800 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0002SREPY/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive

or

B) Lisle 30500 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0002SREB8/ref=dp_image_text_0?ie=UTF8&n=15684181&s=automotive?

Advice from those who have removed and reinstalled these bands would be appreciated.

Hey there DennisWaller.

If I take your first link, and go about half way down the page, I find this tool

http://www.amazon.com/Lisle-30950-Constant-Velocity-Banding/dp/B0002SRCZQ/ref=pd_bxgy_auto_text_c

recommended for the clamp (I presume it to be a use two or three times tool). It appears the two you link to are also appropriate, but more robust, more expensive.

you could use thin jubilee clips

don't worry about balance the shafts rotate relatively slowly compared to wheels

I'm curious about the comment, "the shafts rotate relatively slowly compared to wheels".

The angular velocity is the same for the wheel and shaft. The linear velocity, a function of the angular velocity and radius under analysis, can be different, but the angular velocity will not, assuming a typical half shaft from transaxle to hub (1 to 1 relationship).

The Lisle 30800. I have one that's over 20 years old. Used it many times years ago and it's what you need for the type of band you're working on.

As a sdie note, any particular reason you're booting joints? Got away from that near the end of my mechanic career when complete driveshafts became so cheap. Perhaps you're working on a special application.

Hi DennisWaller,

Just a suggestion: which I've used a number of times, with perfectly acceptable results. Why don't you just use cable/zip ties?

Let me clarify some details. If you are installing new CV bands as you've illustrated, you should use the Lisle tool whose part number I noted.

Other tools will distort and/or damage the band beyond use. I have straightened used bands in the past many years ago on a few occasions, but that did not usually work. On occasion it did, but not often.

I have used cable ties; the issue here is many are not heat rated sufficiently high to use without premature failure from heat related stress.

Use a new band, tighten with the tool I noted. You'll get the best results.
