Simple i think.

remove dc generator and replace with alternator.

fit 12 volt battery, 12 volt starter, 12 volt horn and anything else that was 6 volt.

I dont know what exact parts you need i think you will have to expriment.

the only problem is the engine.

is it diesel or petrol?

and if petrol does it have a magneto of coil and points?

Are there any colours on the wires? if so just replace the damaged sections using any colour so long as the ends match < if that makes sense.

Ive done this sort of wiring on cars before where part has been damaged by fire.

if the wires are all the same colour as they can be on some cars, you will need to start at one end, say the light switch and trace each wire from start to fininsh, working out what each wire would have done tracing by metering whats left then replace the whole wire then start again on the next wire, Until all have been replaced, Then tidy the wiring loom as the bunch of wires is called using pvc tape, you may even try to cover some of the exposed sections with braiding or run it through steel tube over the long sections, to make it squirrel proof.

Its a pity i live so far away as i could do it for you, I am bored anyway as i am unemployed at present somthing to do with recession, as its the longest ive been unemployed for over 30 years, I used to be able to move from job to job.

Let me know if there is any colors on the wires?

Oh and let me know where on the tractor the damage is, to give me an idea of what the damaged wires may have done

There is really not much to the wiring. To convert to 12 volt system, disconnect all wiring from old regulator and tape them up, except for the one going to the battery.Remove the old generator and fabricate a bracket to mount an alternator.Purchase a one-wire alternator and install.Connect the battery wire to the ouput terminal of the alternator. Some of the old 6 volt systems were positive ground, so you may have to reverse the leads on your ammeter and your battery if this is the case. You will need to install a ballast resistor in series with the hot side of the ignition coil, or install a 12 volt coil.

One thing about the one-wire alternator:When starting up, they require revving the engine up a bit to start self-excitation of the fields.I would also recommend installing a new condenser rated for 12 volt system. They seem to make the points last longer in my experience.I have converted many of the old tractors this way.

If you have any lighting, of course, change them to 12 volt also.

And I am with you on the squirrel issue. They ate all of my pecans last year.I will eat them this year, or the cat will.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention, you can keep the 6 volt starter. It will work fine, and not burn out because it is intermittent duty and it only takes a few seconds to start unless you have other problems with the engine.
