Motor rating

Hi.

I have chosen a VT pump discharging 5500m3/hr at a head of 112m. The pump efficiency is 90% and motor efficiency is 95%. The motor rating works out to be 1962KW . A margin of 5% is given. So the net motor rating will be 2060KW.

If we r going for a motor of 2200KW instead of 2060KW ,what are the pros and cons involved if we go for 2200KW motor.

Kindly help in this amtter.

No, the motor rating doesn't work out to be 1962kW. That is the electrical input power to the motor. The rating is the shaft output power, = pump input power.

But apart from that, I know VT pumps have good efficiency (compared with e.g. centrifs) but I didn't think they were quite as good as 90%. Though could be right for a big one like this.

I see nothing wrong in going for the 2200kW motor. It's always good to have power in hand, and it will only draw the power needed. Also your figures look like they're at duty point, but have you checked power at other points on the curve? VT pumps are different from centrifs in that power drawn increases with decreasing flow (increasing head) and there is often a sharp rise in power as you get close to zero flow (pump dead-headed). There's a good chance even 2200kW is too small for that condition. If that's the case you need to make sure closed-valve (or excessive head) conditions cannot occur.
