Virgin: Earth Challenge! For $25 Million Prize

02/10/2007 9:21 PM

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2007/02/09/warmingprize_pla.html?category=earth&guid=20070209093000 "Virgin" is offering enough money to swim in to the person who comes up with a way to take large amounts of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. The first thing that comes to my mind is that if we didn't chop down all the trees, we would already have our mega air filter. Since we don't have the trees we used to, we have to come up with another way to clean it out of the air.

I read a couple articles on it and someone has actually thought about bottling up the co2 and storing it underground. That sounds like the hard way to go about it, and very inefficient too. They'll probably create the amount of co2 they are storing when they dig the hole to put it in.

My guess at the right direction is to try and recreate what the trees and plants do naturally and put it on a large scale. maybe we should store it in greenhouses the size of cities and just grow crops inside them to use it up. Or create large farms out in the ocean of plants that will grow there and suck it all up. The byproduct being oxygen. I am not a scientist but its a good start and this is the best place to watch a topic grow into a monster! it's a $25 million prize

Thanks! M. Hobgood
