McAfee Computer Sabotage?

04/19/2010 8:25 PM

Has anyone had any problems with McAfee downloading an update and then all of a sudden the computer is infected with all kinds of virus' ? Turns out it was bogus, The McAfee rep. uninstalls the antivirus software, then to help us anymore he needs $90.00, this is the type of behavior of scam artists. We had 3 months left on our subscription. So we go to Norton, install it, they confirm that is was a hoax by a single trojan application allerting about false virus notifications. Noton can't directly tie it to the McAfee rep, but Im wondering if they work on commission...

Has anyone else had an experience like this with McAfee?

Whats the best antiviral out there for PCs?

Scammers are getting better and better. They would normally use a "software company name" usually made up, telling you your machine was infected. Run a bogus virus scan and then tell you that additional software or tech help is required to remove it. Instead of fixing your computer it loads it with all kinds of goodies while disabling your protection and charges you to boot. Now they have your credit card information for further use. As they get better, they scan your system first to see what is loaded on your computer and tell you (enter software name) has detected Blah, Blah, BLAH!
Always shut the notice down and run your own check yourself, and hope they didn't overwrite with a fly-by download. Either way they S*ck!

Thx, my wife went to the McAfee site and she said it looked like the right place, but it may not have been, it's just a computer screen. And she talked to a tech, but who knows is on the other end of the phone. However we did get email confirmation of a complaint from McAfee, so I think this was McAfee behaving badly.

thx GA
