Career Opportunities

04/22/2010 3:54 PM

I have worked in the field of Vacuum Plastic Manufacturing for over 7 years. Currently, I am laid-off and looking for work. Living in Washington Twp. MI (29 & VanDyke) Do you have any openings in my area for this type of work?

Hey, good luck finding a job. If you can't find full-time work, then maybe do some temporary work; job shopping in/out-of-state; look into Volt Technical, etc. Any former employees involved with a start-up company that need help? Do you think you could do some consulting work?

I'll never forget the time a fellow Raytheon engineer was given two weeks notice. He was immediately on the phone talking non-stop, calling fellow engineering contacts and by the end of the day he had a job lined up. That was during better times, but it showed me if you want a job bad enough there's probably one out there.

I'm semi-retired and doing consulting work for fellow, past employees involved with start-ups. I've been lucky; never been laid-off from a full-time employment position. I'd tell junior engineers not to be a hallway monitor (one that chats a lot in the hallways). My theory was managers could easily see someone standing in the hallway shooting the bull. That puts a big target on your head! This is Bill's Words of Wisodom #4 <g>.

Hi.

I suggest you should try for any other field where you can use your electrical/mechanical expertise. Accept whatever is offered to you in these bad days of unemployment.

Good suggestion about being open to other fields. You might discover more interesting engineering work. I know physicists and chemists that are designing electronic circuits today. They started off dabbling with circuits and ended up designing them.
