Nanomilling Breakthrough at IBM

04/23/2010 6:32 AM

Caught this article in the news this morning. The nanoscale milling involves a tip similar to the ones used for atomic force microscopy, and they say it's cost effective and a serious production method.

http://www.upi.com/Science_News/2010/04/22/IBM-announces-nanotech-breakthrough/UPI-37091271959200/

I reckon nanoscale is not only the next wave of miniaturization, it really is the last wave. Nothing is going to be built on a finer scale than that.

Just wondering about the implications of reaching that limit: could we finally reach the point where it is worth having machines that are built to last instead of so quickly becoming obsolete and replaced with "the new standard"?

I didn't find a link to the article in Advanced Materials, but maybe somewhere here amongst the new stuff ahead of print.

Nothing is going to be built on a finer scale than that.

As the old saying goes, never say never!

Reminds me of a story from some time ago where a US company was convinced they had manufactured the smallest drill bit. During the marketing campaign they sent copies around for trials. Wouldn't you know it, our Japanese friends sent it back with a hole drilled through it.

Food for thought.

Jim

You are right. They're talking 15 nm resolution here, but there are people working on molecular scale designs using graphene, according to the wiki each atom is 0.142 nm.

Ah, they'll make a fortune with the new 'nanoscale' first, and then molecular will come out.. of course.

I remember that story from many years ago, except that as I remember it (could easily be mistaken) it was the Germans who drilled the hole through the drill.

Hi all,

We've set the original Advanced Materials article free to access, if anyone would like to know more about the science; sorry we didn't get the link out earlier. You can find it through our news site here: http://www.materialsviews.com/details/news/687441/Nanocartography__in_3D.html

Thanks,

Adrian Miller

I gather one must register to view the article. I saw an abstract once, but was unable to return to it later. Never did find the article. Is a direct link possible?

Why bother to make a model of the world at a scale that is too small to photograph? How do you know that it succeeded?

Hi dkwarner,

I also found this site recently, with over 6000 peer reviewed articles on nanotech available free of charge.

http://www.nanoarchive.org/

cheers.

Thank you Adrian. The Materials Views news article is concise and has images that illustrate the scale. The abstract for the IBM publication is here:

I think that's the abstract I saw once and could not get to a second time. Now where is the actual article?

You do have to register to get access to the article. There's a link on the top of the abstract for pdf or html full text.

Sorry for the problems with article access; we've double-checked the settings and you should be able to access it now through the abstract page (using the html of pdf links above the text). Hope you find it interesting!
