Generator Trippings-Simulation

04/26/2010 4:54 AM

We have generating units where the existing T90GS 4.2 MW machine will be operated in parallel with new SG-400 machine (11-13 MW) at rated load.. If the SG-400 trips while operating in parallel with existing T90GS 4.2 MW machine, then running plant load will be absorbed by the existing T90GS machine till the load shedding system (PMS system) trips the non-essential loads based on load shedding priority table. The T90GS governor will drive in more fuel into the machine and AVR will boost the voltage till the load shedding system trips the excess load from the system. If there is any mismatch between two events then, there will be cascade tripping of the remaining running generators. In the current set up the existing Rustons (2.3 MW) are run in parallel with T90GS at 2.3 MW against 4.2 MW capacity of the Rustons. In the past, T90GS was run at 4.2 MW with existing Rustons running at 2.3 MW, there were casacade trippings of ruston generators on T90GS's trip due to any reason. The rustons are not able to survive the load impact due to slow response from existing Ruston governor and prolonged delay in existing PMS scheme.
Can this simulation can be tested computer simulation tools like ETAP/SKM etc.? how?

Yes, Etap and SKM can model the system stability with the transient stability module. In my opinion it is only an approximation that is very conservative. In other words, if there is any doubt the system would remain stable, the programs will show a pole slipping.

I would suspect that the machines can not accept the load change due to the lack of momentum in the machine as compared to the load.

If the trip is due to frequency, in an island type situation, the under frequency might be adjusted enough to allow the governor to respond.

Another possibility is to contact the governor manufacturer for a possible application specific patch.

GE Multilin claim to have relays that can call for a load shed trip in as little as a few cycles.

plc system will give the fastest most dependable response if configured and tested properly. This can be backed up by uf or roc uf relays.
