Battery State of Charge Indicator - urgent

04/27/2010 4:45 AM

Hi all,

Iam looking for a Battery state of charge indicator (just like a fuel guage meter etc) with the following features

1. Indicates the state of charge(SOC) of the battery (40%, 50% etc) on an indicator and keeps updating as the vehicle is moving (i.e. vehicle battery is charging or discharging) i.e. I want the SOC to be updated in real time. The battery is a Lead acid battery and it is 24v system.

If any body is aware of such products, Please let me know. This is an urgent requirement.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Satya

go to harbor freight and buy 2 battery indicators with LEDs - one for each 12 volts unit. get the minus insulated.

Or you could build one if you're in the mood to play.

You've been on this quest since January. Perhaps, if you gave us some real information about your motivation and ultimate goal, someone might help you.

what is rated capacity for State of charge calculations

Power Supply as Battery Charger?

Hi,

Yeah that's correct.

My goal is to develop a software program which would display the exact state of charge (SOC) of the lead acid batteries using numerical value (80%,92% etc) which would help drivers to identify a low battery state of charge and also improve the efficiency of the batteries by asking the drivers to operate only in a particular range of SOC.

My algorithm works fine if the battery is rested for 3 to 4 hours before the vehicle is started as there would not be any surface charge and the open circuit voltage would give me the initial SOC(as there is a linear relationship between OCV and SOC) and then i can start calculating the Ampere hours and keep updating the SOC as the vehicle is moving.

The main problem that I would face is if the vehicle is stopped for some time (let us say few minutes) and then started there would be surface charge present and whatever OCV(open circuit voltage) i read is not the true OCV and hence my calculations would go wrong. So iam really looking for a solution to this problem.

Please let me know if iam clear in my explanation.

Thanks and regards,

satya

Yes.

Thanks very much. You have now presented a clear problem and objective. Someone with more intelligence than I will probably see this as a challenge and be willing to help.

Good luck.

Is this for a petrol/diesel driven motor vehicle or for an Electrically driven one?

The reason I ask is, that the candle is not worth lighting if it is for petrol/diesel operated vehicle. In most cases once the voltage of the battery falls below a set point (about 10.5V) the engine management systems won't allow the motor to start. [Even if its push started (manual transmission)]. You only are able to use the top 25% charge capacity of the vehicles battery. Vehicle battery charging systems usually have the battery replenished inside 20 minutes of driving, ready for the next start cycle. No vehicle operator intervention required.

However if you are trying to ascertain the viability of the charge in an electrically driven vehicle then that's something to chase. Electrically driven vehicles usually are operated till the batteries are exhausted and it is the last 10% of usable charge that's important. Because that is what the vehicle operator will need to return the vehicle to the charging station. Ever tried pushing a forklift with a flat battery pack?

There are firms that convert petrol/diesel vehicles to full electric operation, who would need a device like this.
