Interesting Read: Paper Boats in the 1800s

04/29/2010 10:00 AM

If you like glimpses into history, you might enjoy this story about how paper pulp was used by a Troy company in the late 1800s. The piece talks about paper's uses in manufacturing winning rowing boats, and also the first paper oil can and an observatory dome.

From the article:
Odd though it may sound, paper then was substantially different from paper today. Rather than being made primarily from wood fibers, paper in the 19th century was made primarily from linen or cotton fiber. Long fibers made a strong sheet, laid up, sealed with resin and varnished.
