An injector is a metal part, on a Mercedes engine - with a thread - Most of the makes
are Bosch or Beru.
In the head holes are drilled to provide a chamber with "seat" at the bottom that stops the injector from being to deep.
There is a lot of heat in the cylinder and also towards the injector.
On the bottom of the chamber a heat shield is applied. It is made of steel or another heat resistant "metal".
Looks like a washer but has also a small chamber in it.
The heat shield protects the injector nozzle from direct heat. The injector is screwed in
with a torque of about 50 to 60 Nm and needs to seal hermetic with this procedure.
Where a holder for the injector is applied, there can be a gap between the holder and the injector.
Only for cosmetics and to keep that gap clean, a rubber sock or sleeve can
be applied in that gap up to the 27 mm hex nut of the injector.
When you replace the injectors, you best replace the heat shields, because otherwise
with multiple use, they leak. You can easily take them out with negative long nose seegering pliers. Clean these gaps out well with air so that nothing falls in the cylinders.
