Bus duct sizing

05/03/2010 4:33 AM

Can anyone please tell me about busduct sizing ? How to size a bus duct?

Specification are :

  • The material of the LV bus duct conductors is Copper.
  • A current of 2500 A from the transformer secondary flows through the bus duct, the voltage being 415 .
  • The short circuit condition is taken as 50 kA for 1 second.
  • temperature 100 degree.
  • operating temperature is 85 degree.

All Inputs are with you,now just you have to calculate the busbar size, enclosure size for your busbars and the length of your busduct...for 2500 Amps I recommend that you use 2x80x10 mm.

Check any busduct manufacturer for Type tested 50KA for 1sec Busduct system.

Ask me If you need any clarification.

copper current carrying capacity is 1.6A per sqmm so that, 2x80x10 x 1.6 = 2560 A

But>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

busbar sizes can not be calculated only from overall size, there are various derating factors like arrangment of busbar, nos of busbar, spacing, enclouser size, ventilation
in room, temp rise, skin effect, proximity effect etc. which need to be consider while designing the busbar.

Aseer,

Thanks again!..Actually,This is my doubt: I took into account the short circuit condition and temperature rise and found out the area of cross section of the bus bar. Now, from this how do we proceed if we have to find out the dimensions of the bus bar enclosure, the distance between centres of 2 busbars or in simple words the overall dimensions of the bus bar enclosure (that houses 3 conductors each having 4 bus bars and a neutral conductor having 2 bus bars) .

Still if you haven't got my point, Please give me your email ID and i'll forward you my calculation.

Thanks for your time
