Production Rates for Carpenters

05/07/2010 8:34 AM

I am trying to figure production rates for carpenters who will be installing formwork for concrete. How fast will it take them to erect the formwork?

How much does a bag of groceries cost?

This question is as quantifiable as the question posed. With some additional information from you, we will be able to hack out some numbers that will be nothing better than a WAG.

Actually, the groceries question is probably more easily quantified. The production rate really depends on the site conditions, type and shape of forms and supports, elevations, and other special considerations

Forgive me.

WAG around here means 'Wild Ass Guess'.

When things can be pinned down a little, you get SWAG. 'Scientific Wild Ass Guess'. These guesses are usually a little closer.

It depends on the carpenter's familiarity of the job, not the manager's familiarity of the job. Ask the carpenter how long this will take. We know nothing of your project but your lack of respect for the people working on this project. If you do not have a carpenter in mind then ask the concrete supplier to recommend a carpenter. If you do not have either in mind, hire a project manager familiar with this type of construction that knows what they are doing.

Is this form work all wood? What magnitude is the project? Driveways or parking garages?

I'm with redfred.

Seriously, if this is what you do for a living, you should know.

I'd start accumulating my own data, then you'll know next time.

In honor of the scholar Milo's admonishment to let the student know the pleasure of the learning experience, search the web. Maybe a carpenter's union would help.

Good luck.

dang! i had 19 minutes and 37 seconds. All kidding aside, a reputable Carpenter / Concrete guy / Contractor would be the best source for info.

As redfred so eloquently stated, without any background info, anything else is a WAG.

I truly agree with the other comments made to your question.

The Production rate will depend entirly on the Carpenters skills & experience on the job and also it depends on the type and size of the work/project. For instance, from experience, formworks for a footpath (100 m) takes 1-2 days for at least 3 labourers.

I have all ways had good luck with RS Means Construction cost books.

The cost are divided into dollar amount as well as production hours for crew with equipment types.

The crew types have very good descriptions of typical crews.

Obviously, you will have to temper the information with the way your crew works.

Thanks for the information . I have just purchased Means Cost Work Data, the job location is in NYC so I will have to temper the crews. If you like I'll get back to you when i have figured out my productivity!
